10th Anniversary of the Derfner Judaica Museum

This year the Derfner Judaica Museum + The Art Collection at the Hebrew Home at Riverdale celebrates its tenth anniversary. In 2009 the Hebrew Home’s Judaica Museum, founded in 1982, was renamed for benefactors the late Helen and Harold Derfner and moved in to the light-filled 5000-square-foot gallery space that it now occupies in the Jacob Reingold Pavilion. Designed by award-winning architect Louise Braverman with lots of glass block walls, light wood and reflective surfaces, its open plan preserves a connection to its spectacular setting overlooking the Hudson River and Palisades. The Museum showcases Jewish ceremonial art from the permanent collection in the ongoing exhibition Tradition and Remembrance: Treasures of the Derfner Judaica Museum. It also features changing exhibitions three times a year, including individual and thematic group shows with works borrowed or drawn from the Museum’s or Art Collection’s holdings of more than 5,000 paintings, sculptures, works on paper and decorative arts. Residents enjoy Museum receptions and educational programs throughout the year.
